Fall Bass Fishing Is Here

SgtMike

Some of the best Bass fishing is available during the months of October and November. The weather is such that dropping air temps create falling water temps. Rain accompanying cold fronts will drop the barometer inducing bass to feed; bass can go into feeding frenzy prior to approaching fronts.

There are several advantages to fishing in the fall; the lake, rivers and streams are not jammed with boaters, skiers, or fishermen. The kids are in school, the fare weather fishermen are hard at work and the sun-worshipers have retired to the tanning solons. The resident anglers are probably out hunting. The temperatures are pleasantly warm and the autumn air is clear and crisp. The sun's rays are low to the horizon allowing for great fishing even during the mid-day hours. Not to mention vast array of fall tree colors, making float fishing to die for.

The odds of catching that big one are improved considerably in the fall. The eating habits of bass changes dramatically. With hot to cold temperatures bass are triggered to feed and build up fat reserves for up coming winter There is reckless abandon among many big bass as these early foraging monsters throw their caution to the wind when feeding shallow and surface-feeding. Baitfish, crayfish, small minnows, shad, bream, frogs and a variety of insects will be consumed in large quantities. Schooling bass stay with the migrating shad. The big largemouth bass will mix with the heavy stripers while smaller bass won't. So keep your eye out for diving birds they can lead you to the migrating schools of shad. Also check the winds; wind often time push shad into protected pockets. Handpoured plastics can be an excellant way to fill your tackle box with an affordable sellection of baits to meet every condition.

There are many areas to fish, with the thousands of prime lake "chains" throughout the country, checkout the narrow canals or creeks connecting these lakes; especially those having small locks that form barriers. Also don't overlook wing dams, seawalls, bridge abutments, riprap, tree and brush lines; as the autumn wind, current and schooling bass themselves push shad to them. All the while bare in mind bass will normally be in areas where shallow water areas are close to deep waters. Look for still-green weed beds, they are alive and hold food for bass; dead and dying brown weeds from lowering lake temps have no bait. Be sure to probe shallow water cover very thoroughly, making casts to likely looking cover.
