Topwater Bite Busts Open
The Fisherman’s Tips has been overwhelmed with phone calls and emails
from anglers letting us know that the fish have been all over topwater
baits in the past two weeks. Early morning cloud cover and warming
water temps have been the main reasons or theories explaining the
surface bite flurry. Believe it or not, Memorial Day Weekend is already
upon us and this time of year usually does kick off the topwater bite
for many of us anglers throughout the country.
The bait that’s getting most of the rave is from the Japanese tackle
manufacture, Deps. The lure is called a Basirisky and comes in a 2.5”
and 3” long version. It is made out of a super soft silicon featuring a
unique configuration with back legs facing forward creating a crawling
surface action. The legs present a bigger profile for lurking
bass looking up through the vegetation and they also leave a huge
ripple on the water. You have to check out its one of a kind
crawling action here.

Adam Koda of Fontana, California was fishing Lake Skinner on May 20th,
in Temecula, California and took 8 fish all on the 3” Basirisky.
His
biggest fish weighed in at at a whopping 8 lbs 9 ounces.
He also
commented that the Basirisky is so weedless that you have to work at it
to get it hung up!! |
The Delta in Northern California has also been
reporting an excellent top water bite on Zara Spooks and the Deps
Buzzjet. The Buzzjet can be seen in action as well.

This bait has been voted Japan’s Number 1 wake bait two years in a row
by Japan’s Lure Magazine reader polls. It features a unique weight
transfer system. 4 Stainless balls are strategically placed in a
chamber, rolling both front-to-back and side-to-side. The
transfer system provides for great castability and also a side to side
irregular surface action on the retrieve.
Topwater fishing is everyone’s favorite type of fishing and the best
time of year to do it is now. Pick up your favorite surface lures right

See you on the water.
