A summer guide to new and better restaurants

Memphis may be known the world over for its barbecue, but the city’s food scene has so much more to offer.

And summer is the perfect time to sample everything Bluff City has to offer – from pancakes to pub flipper, tacos to whipped goat toast.

But with so many options, it can be tricky to know where to start, especially since a number of new restaurants are opening and bringing something new to the table. Don’t worry, we’re here to help.

Here are some Memphis dishes that should be on your list to try (or try again) this summer. Be sure to check this article regularly, as we’ll be updating it throughout the summer.

►Let’s start with some of the new dishes. 2022 has already brought a number of new restaurants to the Memphis area — with plenty more to come later this year. From seafood to bundt cakes, southern dishes to tacos, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of the new restaurants you must try and here are a few more. (We could go on and on.)

►Looking for a place to enjoy a cocktail with an amazing view of the Mississippi River? You’re lucky. There are more options than ever to dine with a view in Memphis. Here are five places Jennifer Chandler, a reporter for Commercial Appeal Food & Dining, recommends to sip a cocktail and watch the sunset over the Mighty Mississippi.

►Speaking of restaurants with a view, Fancy’s Fish House brought riverside dining back to downtown Memphis when it opened on April 8, as part of the One Beale development. At a glance, Jennifer said she expects to find chef-inspired favorites with fresh fish caught daily, a sumptuous raw sea bass and signature dishes from the grill – all served in a dining room with a laid back old Florida fish house vibe.

►We cannot leave out the barbecue. This is Memphis – home of the best barbecue around. If you’ve been living here for more than a week, you probably have a very strong opinion about which is the best barbecue in town. (Let’s be honest: they’re all damn good.) A group of intrepid journalists from Commercial Appeal recently went out trying to find the best barbecue sandwich in town, visiting five restaurants in just under 4 hours. You can follow their route, but be sure to leave time for a nap afterwards.

►The debate over the best beer brewed in Memphis is almost as heated as the debate over the best barbecue. But if you’re looking to try something new… We asked the folks at The CA to share their favorites and came up with this list of nine Memphis beers you should try.
