Challenge Academy cadets learn outdoor skills at Camp Decorah

CAMP DECORAH, Wis. (WKBT) – The Challenge Academy is in shock.

For the next three days, 72 cadets will camp at Camp Decorah to learn how to catch and clean fish.

Many cadets have never fished or camped before.

A cadet says he hopes learning to fish will lead to a delicious meal tonight.

“I’m really excited because I’ve never fished before, well I probably did, but I forgot because I probably didn’t do well or catch anything at all, but I ‘hope I can catch a fish so I can eat it for myself,’ said cadet Jonathan Hughes-Pettigrew.

Cadets will also hike ten miles and receive their dog tags once they reach the top of the cliff.

Cadet Hughes says this is the moment he and his peers have been waiting for and is glad Challenge Academy has given him ‘the courage to change’.

“Since I’ve been here, I’ve been really grateful for this academy, all the benefits, all that stuff, they’ve really prepared me for my future. I just want to thank the academy for even accepting me,” said the Cadet Hughes.

Officials from the US Fish and Wildlife Fish Refuge joined the cadets on the camping trip to give them helpful fishing tips.
