Fishing activities

Low budget family activities

With the July/August holidays in full swing and with the relaxation of several public health measures, this year’s holidays will see parents and children making up for all the opportunities lost over the past two years.

However, while many parents have to work or can’t take their kids on trips abroad, there are plenty of fun activities available locally, and here’s the best part: they’re budget-friendly.

If you’re coming from central Trinidad in particular, be sure to check out some of the places we’ve listed:

  1. Domain La Vega

Located in Gran Couva, La Vega Estate is a unique combination of a garden centre, a nursery, a natural park and a swimming pool. Their natural and recreational park includes acres of scenic green space to picnic, play, relax and enjoy the refreshing outdoors.

There are also several ponds on the enclosure where you can fish for tilapia and crayfish (at a low price). They are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and currently offer promotions.

Telephone contact – 679-9522.

  1. Well amusement park

This water park is located in Cunupia, on the corner of Welcome Road North and Raghunanan Road to be exact. There are several specials throughout the week and they recently introduced a free movie night by the pool. However, the number of places is limited, but people are invited to bring their own chairs. No outside food or drink is permitted and the offer does not provide access to the swimming pools.

Contact them at 739-7961.

3. Kalpoo Fishing Trips

Hosted by Kalpoo Ibis Tours Bird Sanctuary and located within the grounds of Caroni Bird Sanctuary, this family run business currently has several offerings, one of the most popular being their fishing trips. If you’re looking for a fun family outing, Kalpoo’s seasoned captains will take you from the Caroni Swamp through the beautiful mangroves to the Gulf of Paria. Their tours are scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with check-in at 7:00 a.m.

Call Navin at 303-4287 or Ravi at 298-5310 to make your reservation or for more information.

  1. Harry Water Park

Heading a bit further south, but still in the center of Tabaquite, Harry’s Water Park and Nature Resort promise a day full of fun activities. From the water park and zip line to the nature trail and overnight in the cabanas, Harry’s has now added table tennis and mini golf to its offerings.
