Ministry of Natural Resources: organize a free fishing weekend

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites Wisconsin organizations to host free fishing events for the public during Free Fishing Weekend, June 4-5.

Fishing clubs, civic groups, churches, trade associations and municipal recreation departments are among the many types of groups MNR encourages each year to hold free fishing events for all ages.

“The Free Fishing Weekend is a great kick-off to the summer fishing season,” said Theresa Stabo, MNR’s Angler Outreach Coordinator. “We are thrilled to share the joy of fishing with people who have never fished before and to reintroduce it to those who have left the sport behind. The beautiful waters of Wisconsin in early summer are a time and a place ideal for doing so.

During Free Fishing Weekend, all Wisconsin waters are open to residents and non-residents to fish without a license or trout or salmon stamp. However, organizations hosting free fishing events should note that all fishing regulations, including size and catch limits and species restrictions, will apply.

Organizations planning an event can borrow basic fishing gear for their event from any of the 52 tackle lending sites across the state. Nearly half of the sites are in state parks located on the water, making it easy for groups to grab loaner gear and fish in one spot.

The DNR encourages organizations to consider a state park as a site for free fishing events. Contact park staff to arrange the event.

June 4 and 5 are also Free Fun Weekend, when state park admission fees and trail passes are waived.

Organizations are encouraged to register their events with the DNR for further promotion to the public. After registering, organizations can request materials to distribute at their events, such as fishing rules, fishing jokers and posters.

The registration deadline for events is May 25.
