The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will sponsor more than 20 fishing events for children across the state in recognition of National Fishing and Boating Week, June 4-12. The Wildlife Commission will be stocking fish at many event sites to enhance the experience, and youth 16 and older who generally require a fishing license will be exempt from this requirement.
“By giving those who don’t have a fishing license a ‘pass’ to these events, we hope that mums, dads, aunts, uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers – anyone take this child fishing – will see the value of investing in a license for the future,” said Madeline David, Angler Engagement Coordinator for the Wildlife Commission. “Fishing is a fantastic activity for bonding family. “
During the events, children will have the chance to register their name in a draw organized by the Wildlife Commission. The grand prize is a Sportsman Lifetime license courtesy of Neuse Sport Shop in Kinston, which covers inland fishing and hunting in North Carolina. The second place prize, donated by North Carolina Council of Trout Unlimited, is a full lifetime inland fishing license. Other prizes include fishing rods, tackle boxes, water bottles, and waterproof Bluetooth speakers. Local partners can also offer additional prizes or gifts to young anglers.
Draws will take place at the end of June and will be published on the Wildlife Commission website, ncwildlife.org, in July. Winners of the lifetime license will be invited to a special presentation of their license by the commissioners and a celebration with the staff of the Wildlife Commission.
“We are grateful to our partners, Neuse Sport Shop and Trout Unlimited, for providing these licenses to two budding anglers,” said David. “We hope to see these children enjoy fishing for many, many years. Even in a lifetime, I’m not sure anyone can take advantage of all of the amazing fishing opportunities in North Carolina.
