How to get a fishing rod Red Dead Redemption 2

Initially, you will not have access to the fishing rod in RDR2. However, you don’t have to worry about buying it anywhere. You will have understood it in the story.

Shortly after arriving at the gang’s second hideout, you’ll set off on a mission where you’ll take the young boy, Jack, fishing. After this mission you will get permanent use of the fishing rod.

How to fish in Red Dead Redemption 2

To equip your fishing rod, all you have to do is open your object wheel with L1 or LB, go to the “Objects” category and equip it by pointing the left stick on the 5 o’clock position of the wheel. objects.

Once the fishing rod is equipped, the controls are as follows:

  • L1 / LB: Hold down to display the bait wheel.
  • L2 / LT: Hold to grab the rod.
  • L2 / LT + R2 / RT: Hold to determine throwing force. Let go.
  • R2 / RT: press to flick the bait, hold to hook a fish.
  • Left stick: move the rod.
  • Right stick: turn clockwise to roll up.
  • Triangle / Y: Quick bait to equip. (Will equip the last bait you used.)
  • Circle / B: Reset your throw or cut the line.

Keep a close eye on the prompts in the lower right corner of the screen to see what each button is doing at any given time.

Before casting, you need to choose your bait by opening the item wheel by pressing L1 or LB. There are two types of bait, which will affect the way you fish. We’ll put a list of baits below, including a list of the best baits to use in a particular situation. For now, however, we’ll see how to use both types.

How to fish with bait

Perishable baits require more precision when casting and are used when trying to hook small to medium sized fish. When using this bait you’re going to want to look for water rings and bubbles on the surface that will indicate where the fish are.

The goal of bait fishing is to land the hook almost directly on the fish you are trying to catch. You can change the distance you throw by holding your rod and using the pressure sensitive triggers. The more pressure you use, the further you will throw.

Once your hook lands near a fish, you’ll want to use R2 / RT to spin the rod. This will attract fish nearby and cause them to take the bait, but if you do this too often, you will scare the fish away. Often, fish nibble on the bait before taking the hook, but some bite immediately. Each species has a different bite pattern, so be sure to keep an eye out for the button prompt in the lower right corner of the screen. When “Hook Fish” lights up, press R2 / RT to place the hook.

Most bait-biting fish are smaller, so you don’t have to worry about them fighting a lot. Simply turn the right trigger clockwise until the fish is coiled up and you can see what you have caught.

Baitfish are easier to catch, but pay less than the bigger ones you can catch with lures.

How to fish with lures

Red Dead Redemption 2 Lure Fishing

Lure fishing is how you will get the biggest catch in the game. With lures the cast is the same, but the approach to fishing is different. Instead of throwing near a fish you want to catch, you’re going to want to throw at them. Once the lure is in the water, you need to roll it up slowly to attract the fish. You can spin the lure with R2 / RB, just like with the bait, to attract fish, but again, if you do this too often you will scare them away.

When you are fishing with a lure, you are likely to attract medium to large fish. These will give you a hard time and you will have to be careful lest you break your line. When you have a hooked fish struggling, push the rod in any direction to prevent it from pulling more line. Be aware, however, that if you hold it too far in one direction, the line may break. When a fish is struggling, you’ll also want to make sure you don’t wind the line. With bigger fish, you only want to turn when they are tired.

Depending on the size of the fish, it may be difficult to bring one back. There are giant creatures in the waterways of Red Dead Redemption 2, and each species of fish has a legendary variant that is aggressive and much more difficult to catch than the regular type.
