Richard ‘Dickie’ Colburn dies after major shipwreck in Orange County


The two drivers were taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

ORANGE, Texas – The Orange Police Department is investigating a fatal wreckage that killed a local Orange fishing guide and injured another person on Wednesday night.

It happened in the 7600 block of Martin Luther King Drive. Orange police and first responders from the Orange Fire Department reported the major accident around 5:30 p.m.

The accident involved a white 2009 Chevrolet pickup truck and a multicolored 2005 Ford SUV. A 12News team at the scene saw firefighters use the Jaw of Life Tool to help remove the driver from the van. From the footage taken at the scene, it appears the van was T-boned.

The driver of the Ford SUV was transported to St Elizabeth’s Hospital by the Acadian Ambulance with minor injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup has been identified as Richard Colburn, 75, of Orange.

Colburn was transported by Air Rescue to St Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont. He was then pronounced dead in hospital at 7:27 p.m.

Colburn was featured regularly in KOGT Radio’s “Let’s Go Fishing” segment. He also wrote for the online news outlet The Records Live in Orange County.

It is still an ongoing investigation with the Orange police.

On Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 5:37 p.m., officers from the Orange City Police Department and first responders from the Orange Fire Department were dispatched to the 7600 block of Martin Luther King Drive in reference to a major accident investigation. Upon the officer’s arrival, it was determined that the accident involved a white 2009 Chevrolet pickup and a multicolored 2005 Ford SUV.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup was transported by Air Rescue to St Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. The driver was then pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:27 p.m. The driver of the Ford SUV was transported to St Elizabeth’s Hospital by the Acadian Ambulance with minor injuries. The deceased white man has been identified as Richard Colburn, 75, of Orange, Texas. The incident is still under investigation by Orange police.
