BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – When Abu Garcia Bassmaster High School Combine presented by Skeeter kicks off September 16, 100 talented anglers from 22 states will have the opportunity to showcase their talents to a host of college coaches and win college scholarships. The three-day event will be held on Wheeler Lake in Decatur, Ala.

The first High School Combine in 2021 generated over $2.6 million in scholarship offers.

“The response to the High School Combine has been incredible,” said Glenn Cale, BASS Nation Tournament Manager for the College, High School and Junior Series. “Having high school anglers travel here from as far away as Minnesota, New Hampshire and Connecticut is truly a testament to the massive growth and appetite for high school and college bass fishing over the past few years. .

“Hearing the anglers share from the high school national championship weigh-in stage that they were headed to college fishing as a direct result of meeting a trainer at the inaugural combine was a huge testament to the impact this event may have on the sport and the skill level that will be displayed.

At the Combined High School, anglers will perform several tasks to show off their skills not only on the water, but also to show off their knowledge of the sport as a whole. After day one, colleges will have the opportunity to select anglers for a “second look” where they can further explore all that that angler has to offer and see if they would be a perfect fit for their fishing program.

“I can’t wait to see anglers across the country and what they can do,” said Corey Yarish of Trophy Club, Texas. “Coming to this combine will allow me to show my abilities in a way that I couldn’t otherwise. I look forward to meeting the coaches and all the great anglers to talk about the sport. I would like to get a scholarship to continue my dreams of fishing at university and studying.

While some anglers are looking for a college where they can compete next year, other student-athletes are hoping to learn from the 2022 High School Combine and build relationships for the future.

“I’m hoping to get some experience for next year’s combine and (I) am curious to meet the college coaches and get their feedback on how I fish,” said Matthew Melvin of Fairfield, Iowa. “I’m definitely going to be a little nervous, but if I think it’s fun and it brings me experience, then a lot of that nervousness should go away.”

Briley Mills of Dallas, Georgia attended the first High School Combine as a sophomore and hopes to build on that experience. Mills is one of many anglers returning to the combine as a member of the upper class.

“Through the first combine, I learned that there are endless possibilities for young women like me to pursue fishing at the college level. I am currently studying different colleges and their fishing programs to find out what best suits my future,” Mills said.

The opportunity to meet potential anglers one-on-one is essential for coaches.

“The combine has given me the opportunity to meet and recruit anglers I would never have been able to assess otherwise,” said Campbellsville University coach Tony Miracle. “It also gives kids the opportunity to meet and talk to universities and coaches they would never have had the chance to meet. This is an incredible opportunity for both parties.
