Winter Carnival Activities | The Deerfield Valley News

BRATTLEBORO – Brattleboro is alive with winter carnival festivities. The ski jump at Harris Hill kicked off on Saturday, followed by a week of all kinds of fun events and activities. Retreat Farm will be at the center of the action with events taking place daily in and around the farm.

Learn the syrup process

On Friday, February 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., join Retreat Farm for its first Maple Open House. See the evaporator in action, learn how sap turns into syrup, and hopefully taste the sweetness of a small, educational maple grove.

Win ice fishing prizes

On Saturday, February 26, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., the ice fishing tournament will take place. Grab fishing gear, a thermos, and lunch, then head to Wantastegok (Retreat Meadows) for a fun day of ice fishing. Prizes will be awarded by age group. Registration begins at 5:30 a.m. on the ice. No pre-registration is necessary. Help Retreat Farm keep the derby going by purchasing a 50/50 raffle ticket. All proceeds and donations from the event will be used to maintain this free event and continue the local tradition.

Learn to ice fish

Also on Saturdays, from 12:15 p.m. to 3 p.m., ice fishing beginners can learn the basics at the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department’s Introduction to Ice Fishing Clinic. Topics covered will include safety, equipment, regulations, and more, allowing participants to learn the skills necessary to ice fish on their own. All material will be provided. Participants should dress for the weather and bring plenty of hot chocolate, as well as a bucket or chair to sit on. Registration is mandatory. Register now at https://vtfishandwildlife.com/calendar/month/fishingclinics.

Play a traditional game

Sunday, February 27, from noon to 3 p.m. The Atowi Project and the Elnu Abenaki Band invite all members of the community to participate. Snow Snake is a traditional game played during the winter months with a slicked track, a carved wooden snow snake and a community of players. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Additional snow snakes will be available for those who wish to participate. The competition and the assembly will take place on the ice. All are welcome to play or enjoy the company at the gathering. All ages and abilities are welcome.
